Meet a Solo Parent: Ashley

How many kids do you have?
 1 child

What is your favorite family holiday tradition?
Christmas Eve baking a cake for Jesus and letting my daughter decorate it.

How has the Lord blessed this season of being a parent?
Jesus has proven time and time again that I can trust Him. That He will always be there for me and my daughter.

How has Solo Parent Society helped support her as a parent during this season?
SPS has helped me not feel alone. That I have a community of solo mom and dads who get the struggles, the hardships and the joys in the chaos.

Meet a Solo Parent: Allison

How many kids do you have?
2 - A daughter who is almost 6 and a son who is almost 5. Their birthdays are two days apart! They will have shared birthday parties until I can't get away with it anymore!

What are your favorite things about being a mom?
Getting to experience the world afresh through my children’s eyes. Every outing, holiday or adventure is more fun to experience with my kids. My son loves all things vehicles, especially airplanes. Witnessing his enthusiasm and getting to join in his discovery of new things brings me great joy. My daughter loves nature and animals, especially insects. Her near obsession with bugs has helped me conquer some of my fears of creepy crawly things and to stop and appreciate the smallest creatures God has created. My kiddos are so funny and outgoing! I love hearing their ideas and commentary on anything from God to school to why the tooth fairy IS real. I’m so thankful God blessed me with this gift of motherhood.

How has the Lord blessed this season of being a parent?
As my precious kiddos joined my family through adoption, single parenting is all I have known. In God’s great Mercy and Grace He has proven himself faithful as Father, Husband and Leader of our little family. I know I can trust in Him to meet all of our needs. The more I learn to abide and seek His ways, the more He answers me through His Word and illumination through the Holy Spirit.  Through parenting, God has demonstrated the fullness of his love, compassion and forgiveness to me that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, I can show my children.

How has Solo Parent Society helped support her as a parent during this season?
I stumbled upon the Solo Parent Society in the winter of 2020. I was in a really dark place emotionally, yearning for Christian fellowship and discipleship. Through the Zoom Solo Parent meetings, God brought like-minded believers into my life that not only were single parents but who desired a closer abiding relationship with the Lord. Although I am unable to join the official SPS Zoom meetings right now, the solid connections I made with other solo parents has led to further bible study and discipleship this year.

I have truly enjoyed the events held to honor and encourage solo parents, especially anything featuring for King and Country and their music! It is wonderful to witness and be a part of a ministry that strives to meet solo parents where they are at and provide a place for them to find community and belonging within the Body of Christ.

Meet a Solo Parent: Amber

How many kids do you have?
I have two kids, a 16-year-old daughter, Jade, and a 19-year-old son, Justice.

What are your favorite things about being a mom?
I love seeing my kids become the unique and amazing individuals they are. Now that they are teenagers, we can have deep conversations and some intense debates. I love hearing their thoughtful perspectives. They challenge me to expand my thinking, and my heart, in so many ways! Watching them grow and mature is a beautiful reflection of God's work in their lives.

How has the Lord blessed this season of being a parent?
God has shown up in some incredible ways for our family this year. I have seen His redemption in healing that is taking place with my ex-husband who is now co-parenting, 50/50, for the first time in 6 years. His safe consistent presence in their lives is a long-awaited and prayed-for gift, one that is providing added stability, support, and security for my kids. Sharing parenting responsibility has also been helpful to me. Parenting alone as the primary custodial parent has often been challenging and tiring so this new season has given me time to rest and reflect. I am grateful.

How has Solo Parent Society helped support her as a parent during this season?
Solo Parent Society is a beautiful constant in my life and has been since the beginning. Having other solo parents who understand the journey makes me feel so much less alone. As part of the SPS team, I am SO blessed to work alongside Robert, Blake, our podcast team, and our group leaders who work together to provide resources to help our solos find healing and hope.

I am continually amazed by the courage, strength, and resilience evident in the lives of the single parents we serve.  Listening to the podcast every week as I create show notes and topic discussions has brought me greater insight and healing as a single mom myself.  Seeing the growth in the single parents on our leadership team continues to reveal God's faithfulness presence in ways that leave me in awe of His goodness in hard seasons. Being part of this ministry is a wonderful gift.

What are your favorite things about being a mom?
Everything. I wanted to be a mom from the time I was little. I adore my boys and getting to watch them grow into men.

How has the Lord blessed this season of being a parent?
My kids and I are very close. We have walked through some very hard things together, including the death of their father, and learned that it is the strength of our relationships with God and each other that really matter in life - that’s a lesson that blesses the way we interact with each other every day but was only internalized because of the struggles. I can honestly say that we know Who holds our futures - no matter what chaos they may come with.

How has Solo Parent Society helped support her as a parent during this season?
If it weren’t for Solo Parent Society, I might still be pretty isolated from the pain. Finding people who did not reject me when I was hurting but rather understood the lessons I was learning with my kids was a catalyst for moving me past the hurt and trauma into a full life with the communities around us. Some things are too hard to walk alone and current society is not set up well to support a family through the death of a spouse - but Solo Parent Society was able to come alongside where the rest of society could not meet us. We will forever be grateful for the amazing people who loved us when love was the only thing that could get us through.

Meet a Solo Parent: Chris

How many kids do you have?
I have 4 kids: a 7 year old daughter, twin 8 year old boys, and a 10 year old daughter.

What are your favorite things about being a dad?
My favorite part of being my kids' dad is sharing the experiences they have and hearing their take on a story. I love discipling them. I love playing with them. But I love even more hearing how all the things we are doing affects their perspective.

How has the Lord blessed this season of being a parent?
The Lord blessed this season of being a parent by allowing me to focus on my kids and building them up. Instead of focusing on another adult, or having them in the mix, I am able to be fully present with my kids and dedicate my time and energy to them. The Lord continues to show my kids through this season that He is present, He loves us, and He takes care of us even when the difficulties come. It has truly been an amazing season of abiding in Him and surrendering all the unknowns that for so long I've tried to control and navigate.

How has Solo Parent Society helped support him as a parent during this season?
Solo Parent Society has helped support me during this season in quite a few ways. The most significant has been the emotional support. Starting it off I felt like I was the only one running this race and trying to heal, but what I found was there were many who had gone through what I had. So I got the emotional support. I received prayer and community support from locals as well as those around the world. I found financial help as well. The Lord was able to use Solo Parent Society in this season to provide for me in ways I needed to step into the next phase of my relationship, and ultimately dependency, on Him.

Meet a Solo Parent: Colin

How many kids do you have? The Lord has blessed me with 1 child, a wonderful 9 year old boy named Declan.

What are your favorite things about being a dad? Aww shucks! Is this a question any parent can easily answer without writing an entire thesis? Being compelled to choose a few, I love seeing my son’s eyes light up when he gives me a hug while we send time together after each school day and watching him grow as child of God.

How has the Lord blessed this season of being a parent? The Lord has blessed this season via many of the Solo Parent Society podcasts and topics, which have been specifically very helpful in my current stage of my solo journey. He has also blessed me by using me as a leader for Solo Parent Society Zoom groups, even though I just consider myself a “regular guy”. All the good that I have accomplished and continue to accomplish is simply because I pray for God to use me and let Him do so for each meeting I lead.

How has Solo Parent Society helped support him as a parent during this season? Solo Parent Society has provided me with what is referred to as a community, but I honestly experience it more as an extended family that knows precisely what I am going through. This is because everyone is either currently going through the same experience(s) or has done so in the past. This extended family provides me a place to express my true feelings and emotions safely, without having those feelings negatively impact my son.
